More manly tears! More falling! More Tonegawa!

Rating: 9.2 yu-gi-oh duels out of 10

Every new episode always seems to deliver more drama and suspense than the previous week’s. Sahara’s tragic fall off the beam, after he had thought he would finally get his shot at the 20 million yen, left me speechless as I couldn’t believe it, much like Kaiji.

Sahara (l) falls to his death after being blown off the beam after thinking he had finally won. Kaiji cannot bear to watch.

All seems lost for Kaiji until he discovers there was a hidden glass staircase running adjacent to both beams. This turned out to be the actual path to the finish as Kaiji makes it up the stairs and into a dark room where he is greeted with applause.

Tonegawa enters again but he tells Kaiji that he can no longer exchange his tickets for money because Kaiji forfeited his right to the money. He recalls how he and the others were begging him to cut off the electricity to the beam and how they were so willing to give up their chance at money just so they could live. Kaiji wants to beat the crap out of Tonegawa (don’t we all?) but the creepy old guy (this was the guy Tonegawa was with on Espoir earlier) says something along the lines of how Kaiji should get another chance (or something).

Kaiji discovers the glass stairs that were the true path to victory. Meanwhile, the creepy old guy who seems to be in charge of everything appears.

Kaiji is taken down to a corridor filled with the other participants from the Human Derby who had fallen off. All of them are writhing in pain from their injuries as the creepy old guy even pokes at one person’s injured leg with his cane. He eventually tells one of his men to give that person money, and he does. Kaiji is then taken into a room, decorated with many portraits and vintage rifles. Tonegawa sits down with Kaiji as he is shown three cards, each marked with “Citizen,” “Emperor” and “Slave.” This seems to be yet another game Kaiji has to play/gamble called E Card but the rules weren’t explicitly stated yet.

Preview for next week:

This series continues to surprise me every week with how intense everything is. We see Kaiji and everyone else being pushed to their mental limits amidst ever-increasing high-stakes gambles where their lives are on the line. I wonder if next week’s episode will be as emotionally charged, or possibly even more.
