Claymore Episode 17—The Witch’s Maw part 3

By Brian

It would be completely inappropriate if “Butterfly” by SMILE.dk played during the part where we see Jean, right?

YES, Jean awakened, and if you get turned on by Awakened Beings AND/OR Butterflies, I think she’ll probably turn you on as you go reach for the Jergens/KY. Clare was told to kill her if it was too late but she realizes Jean still has her human mind, so part of her is still human after all. Clare urges Jean to return to her human form, telling her that it is not impossible to revert back once you have awakened. After a big, bright, non-seizure inducing flash, Jean is…human! YAYYYY. Clare tells her that she has half-awakened and that she was able to bring her back using what Galatea did with Clare when she nearly awakened.

Galatea, on the other hand, is getting her posterior kicked around. The Riful-Dauf Double Team is trying to get her to awaken and Riful comments on how close she came to doing just that and that Galatea’s resistance is something she expected out of a high-ranking Claymore. But then Jean and Clare finally make their entrance to save the day. Jean is willing to sacrifice herself if necessary. Galatea tells Jean to strike Dauf with all her power as she and Clare will both do what they can; Jean has the fastest and most powerful striking attack among all the Claymores. Oh snap!

Dauf is getting cut more times than…something that would get a lot. Riful realizes that when Dauf gets double-teamed, he cannot concentrate on attacking one opponent, and Galatea can use her powers to manipulate yoki again.

WHY IS JEAN COUNTING? Well, she is rotating her arms around (Yo!) as part of her attack. After rotating her arms around each other 21 times, she launches herself towards Dauf and uncoils her arms, creating a piercing corkscrew attack. But Dauf was able to counter (somewhat) and now our Lemonparty of Claymore Heroines is down for the count…Or are they? As Riful comments on how the fight has finished, and insults Dauf for his inability to recover from his injuries, Clare is able to stand on her own feet and asks Jean to perform her ability one more time (no Daft Punk) as she is about to follow Jean’s orders and use her life as she sees fit.

Clare manipulates the yoki and is able to use her flash sword only on Dauf’s arms, preventing Jean from getting hit. Then Galatea manages to manipulate yoki further by preventing Dauf from attacking. Jean flies and pierces a hole clean through Dauf but gets pwned by Riful, who partially awakens her arm, forming an array of ensnaring tentacles that traps Jean. Clare, not amused at the fact Riful has a cooler arm than she does, strikes Riful in the head. Riful counts this as the one hit needed to make her spill out the info Clare wanted to know and proceeds to transform into her awakened form.

Riful, now a YUGE towering ribbon-like tentacle bitch, tells Clare about the one in the icy lands of Alphonse in the North, whose name is Easley (no, not that scrub backup second baseman). I thought it was Isley (no Isley Brothers) but if it is Easley, then so be it. Anyway, Riful tells Clare that joining forces with her is the only way to defeat Easley. Before Clare, Jean, and Galatea can respond, Riful spirals away and vanishes into the sky. Clare becomes angered at herself over the fact that the gap in power between her and the Dwellers of the Deep/Abyssal Ones is just far too wide to close. Galatea approaches Clare and tells her to return to the Org without resistance. Clare refuses and Jean stands up for her saying she owes Clare her life and is willing to fight Galatea. Galatea, clearly not wanting to ruin her beautiful face any further, and realizing that both Clare and Jean are going against the Org’s orders, puts away her claymore and walks away. But before leaving, she tells Clare and Jean that they have no chance against the Dwellers. She urges them to live on until the next time they meet, where Galatea herself may either be their friend or foe.

In the end (no Linkin Park), we see a group of three Claymores presumably in Alphonse (I MEAN, C’MON, WHERE ELSE WOULD IT BE SNOWING THAT HARD) getting owned by a bunch of awakened beings…oh noes, teh horror…

No shonen series is complete without its cast of characters willing to defy orders set by a higher-ranking organization, and Clare and Jean both demonstrate that. Interesting that Galatea relented and just let them go, without dealing her elegant justice. Perhaps she knows they are gonna get owned by the Org later on, anyway? Is Clare going to deal her justice out in Alphonse? She better be ready to face whatever is out there, as it’s clear that three Claymores alone cannot survive out there…

Next week: Claymore party, big Claymore lady with TWO swords, Clare gets attacked, and more awakened being nonsense in the North!
